Frameless: the Showpiece

Frameless enclosures use thick tempered glass (typically 3/8″ to 1/2″) strong enough to stand without a metal frame — just discreet clips and hinges. The result is a clean sheet of glass that makes even a modest bathroom feel like a hotel suite.

• Looks: unmatched. Tile work stays visible; the room feels bigger.
• Cleaning: easiest — no frame channels for soap scum and mildew to hide in.
• Durability: the thick glass is robust, and quality hardware lasts decades.
• Cost: the premium option — heavier glass and precision installation cost more.

Semi-Frameless: the Smart Middle

Semi-frameless designs frame the perimeter of the enclosure but leave the door itself frameless. Glass is usually 1/4″ to 5/16″.

• Looks: much cleaner than old framed units; slim metal lines remain.
• Cleaning: good — fewer channels than fully framed, more than frameless.
• Cost: a meaningful savings over frameless, especially for standard-size openings.

Three Questions That Decide It

1. How is your tile? Frameless glass showcases everything — including imperfect tile. If the surround is dated, budget for both or lean semi-frameless.

2. How much swing room do you have? Hinged frameless doors need clearance; tight bathrooms often call for a sliding configuration instead.

3. Is your opening square? Older homes rarely are. Custom measuring and fabrication — which we do in-house with brands like Holcam — is the difference between a watertight fit and a leaky compromise.
