December is when window shopping gets serious — usually from the couch, next to the window seat nobody will sit in because it is freezing. The question we hear most this time of year: is triple-pane glass worth the money here? Honest answer: it depends, and here is the math.

U-Factor: the Winter Number

U-factor measures how fast heat escapes through the whole window — lower is better. Roughly: old single-pane runs around 1.0; builder-grade double-pane from the 1990s about 0.50; a modern low-E double-pane with argon lands near 0.27–0.30; and a good triple-pane reaches 0.17–0.22.

Notice the big jumps happen before triple-pane. Going from 1990s glass to modern double-pane cuts heat loss nearly in half. Triple-pane improves on that by another quarter or so — real, but smaller.

Where Triple-Pane Shines

• Comfort near the glass. The interior pane stays several degrees warmer, so the cold-radiating effect beside big windows disappears. For a reading nook or a bed under a window, this is the difference you feel.
• Noise. The extra pane and asymmetric air spaces knock down road noise noticeably — worth considering near Highway 395 or busy arterials.
• North-facing rooms that never get free solar heat in winter.

Where Double-Pane Wins

• Payback. Triple-pane costs more per window; in our climate the pure energy savings alone can take a long time to cover the difference.
• Weight. Heavier sashes need beefier hardware — a quality frame matters more.

A quality low-E double-pane with argon is the right answer for most Tri-Cities homes — and where the budget allows an upgrade, spend it selectively: triple-pane on the north side and bedrooms, double-pane everywhere else.
