January is planning season. If new windows are on the list for this year, a little strategy now means better pricing, better scheduling, and no surprises. Here is how we walk our customers through it.

Step 1: Walk the House and Triage

Not every window needs replacing at once. Sort yours into three buckets: failing (fogged glass, rot, will not lock, always drafty), tired (functional but inefficient), and fine. The failing list is this year’s project; the tired list can be phase two.

Step 2: Understand What Drives Cost

• Count and size — more glass, more money; oversized and specialty shapes cost more per opening.
• Material — vinyl is the value leader; fiberglass adds durability and slimmer frames.
• Installation type — insert (retrofit) installs preserve existing trim and cost less; full-frame replacement addresses rot and lets you change opening sizes.
• Glass package — low-E coatings and argon are standard from us; sound packages and triple-pane are upgrades where they earn their keep.

Step 3: Phase It Smart

Replacing in phases? Do it by side of the house rather than one window here and there — it keeps the exterior looking uniform and makes each installation trip efficient. Most customers start with the weather side (west and north here) or the rooms they live in most.

Step 4: Time It Right

Windows are made to order — typical lead time runs several weeks from final measure to install. Planning in January and February means your project is scheduled before the spring rush, and yes, we install year-round (see next month’s post on winter installs).
